in private collection
Jean Marie ACHARD-JAMES ; third son of Jean François ACHARD and Gabrielle PLASSON de LACOMBE, was born on August 21, 1780 in Riverie (Rhône). He married Antoinette BAGNION on November 20, 1810.
Jean Marie ACHARD-JAMES was Counsellor to His Majesty, Auditor at the Imperial Court of Lyon by Imperial decree under the date of 1811. The following April 20, he was installed in this capacity with all the other members of the court.
On June 19, 1811, following an order from the Emperor Napoleon, Jean Marie went to the Valais, newly reunited with the Empire, under the name of the department of Simplon. There he exercised the functions of Imperial Prosecutor at the Tribunal sitting at Sion, also as Imperial Criminal Prosecutor in the Department of Simplon and was to organize the judicial system there. On May 22, 1825, he was named Chevalier of the Royal Order of the Legion of Honour.
Jean Marie had two sons, François and Clairanne, and two daughters, Catherine and Antoinette. It is the descendants of both Clairanne's sons that are followed here. His daughter, Antoinette married René Sain-Rousset de Vauxonne.
It is from a son of Clairanne, Marie-Pierre Antoine Albert Achard-James, that those who today bear the name Achard-James are descended.
From the other son, Pierre Henri Marie René Achard-James, the Théry, Hofmann, Bartholomew and Croiset families are descended.
