THE ACHARD ANCESTORS

Filiation lineage from the Noble Achard Family

Twenty-four generations from Elbon Achard in 985 to Jean-Marie Achard-James

Abridged from an old handwritten genealogy of around 1822 written by Isabelle Achard-James.

The existence of the noble house of ACHARD is well documented by ancient titles and it seems that N .. ACHARD bishop of NOYON was from this same family. We know that he lived in the year 640 and that he was grand referendaire and grand chancellor under the kings of FRANCE Clotaire II and CLOVIS II; but it would be difficult to trace the filiation followed by this family to such a remote period.

The paternal line of descent that is followed here is taken from an old handwritten genealogy of 1822 which is preserved in the archives of this family and goes back to ELBON ACHARD who signed a deed of gift that his son ROBERT ACHARD and wife ADARDE of the said ROBERT made in the year 985 to the Monastery of Saint Cyprien in Poitiers. Consequently the said ELBON ACHARD will form the first degree of the present decendency below.
This genealogy in turn is largely transcibed from the Dictionnaire de la Noblesse, Paris, 1770.

Jean Francois Achard's signature

Jean François Achard was born 24 July 1747, and was 10 years old when his father died. It was the premature death of his father and his modest fortune were the two reasons he didn’t join the military. He opted to become a lawyer. Domiciled in Montbrison, Jean François Achard became proprietor of the Seigneurie de Peatieux, bestowing this title and name on his fourth son. He sold the country house in Millery, which had belonged to Nicolas Achard, his 2nd great-grandfather.

The love that Jean François manifested for his sovereign must necessarily have placed him on the opposite side from citizens who under the guise of liberty and equality, brought only chains of iron to the French nation. The political convictions and the courageous honesty which J. F. Achard always manifested, meant Jean François' name ended up on a host of proscription lists. The resistance with which the town of Lyon opposed anarchy motivated him to embrace a military career.

After the capture by the armies of the National Convention of the City of Montbrison, those of Feurs (?) and St Etienne, J.F. ACHARD retired to Lyon which was besieged. He was reported by the anarchists as the leader of what they then called the rebels. A price was put on his head and he only managed, after the capture of Lyons, to escape assassination by fleeing his country. He emigrated at the end of 1793, leaving his wife and eldest son in the dungeons and his three other sons under the burden of proscription and who, even at a very young age, were forced to flee.

According to A. Vachez in the obituary of Jean-Marie his son, Jean François was named 'notaire royal'. Belonging to the great old family of Forez, Jean-François was of great renown in Riverie. He was prosecutor of the seigniorial jurisdiction. He built a big house. He seemed well established when suddenly, in 1786, he gave up his practice and moved to Montbrison taking over the role of Receveur Général des Consignations du Pays de Forez – where he was when the Revolution erupted.

Despite his title of King's Counsel, Jean-François was not disturbed by the events during the first months. In September 1793, Forez was invaded by troops from Lyon. He resigned from his post and immediately approached the departmental authorities providing a statement promising to pay all dues he owed – an act for which he was honored and applauded.

He was thus able to return to Montbrison. Due to differences with the mayor, he felt threatened and chose to leave the city to join the Army of the Rhine. During their escape, his wife was arrested and brought to Lyons where she was held at the Hôtel de Ville. During this time, the children lived hidden in the countryside on a family farm belonging to Boisset, near Montrond.

His wife Gabrielle was released during the Thermidor revolution, but it was not until 1799 that the name of Jean François was removed from the list of emigrants. A few years later, he was appointed justice of the peace in Arbresle.

• He was Notaire Royal.

Jean married Gabrielle Plassons de Lacombe [1754] [MRIN: 667], daughter of Jean Pierre Plassons de Lacombe , Seigneur De Lacombe [1960] and Antoiniette de Godde [2505], on 11 May 1772.

The troubles of the Revolution soon threw him into a military career. He served as long as the resistance given by the city of Lyon and its allies to the ravages of anarchy lasted. In this war P.C. ACHARD distinguished himself several times. He found himself part of events which took place at St Etienne and at Salvezinet.

In the first, which was less of a pitched battle but more a multitude of smaller fights. About twelve hundred men had to prevail in the streets of a populous city, against almost the entire population numbering at least twenty thousand on the offensive. Pierre Catherine ACHARD, aged 17 ½, demonstated a trait of devotion and courage, bringing his ranking closer to the General who commanded in this affairs. (He was known under the disguised name of Alimbert, but he was a Grammot). As a man from the populous placed inside a house at the skylight of a cellar, takes aim at the General, Pierre was a few steps from him. Seeing this, he stands in front of Alimbert, the shot goes off and neither is hit. P.C. ACHARD is at the headquarters of Lyon and was distinguished by the one who commanded in this city. He marched out with the vanguard of the so-called Army of Dreux and only left this general at the the very end.

Taken prisoner a few leagues from Lyon, P.C. ACHARD was taken back to this city, thrown into the dungeons but managed to escape the revolutionary axe. He emigrated at the end of 1793 and did not return to his homeland until several years later.

On the orders of the emperor Napoléon and Baron Rambaud, Jean-Marie was transferred to the Valais (now Switzerland) recently reunited into the Empire under the denomination of the Département of Simplon to exercise the functions of Procureur Impérial Criminel of that département and to establish the judiciary system there. He returned during this time his title of Conseiller de sa Majesté, Auditeur à la Cour Impérial de Lyon. His mission to introduce the French judicial order in a département recently reunited and to organize the administration of justice was short-lived as Austria invaded Switzerland and the Valais was cut off from France in Geneva.
