Genealogy of the Bartholomew Family
A family of Scottish engravers and mapmakers and their descendants

Last Update: 15 March 2024

Linlithgow in the 1600's

There are four significant family groups of Bartholomews originating in Scotland. We know all are genetically related through DNA testing. (1) Bartholomews of Renfrewshire; (2) Bartholomews of Duntarvie/Kirkliston; (3) Bartholomews of Falkirk/Muiravonside; and (4) Bartholomews of Linlithgow. For more information on these separate groups, follow the link here.

The Bartholomews of Linlithgow family story begins with Archibald Bartholomew, Merchant and Burgess of Linlithgow, Scotland. He was born ca.1682 and died ca.1750. Archibald married Agnes Morrison, daughter of John Morrison, on 24 July 1709.

Archibald and Agnes had nine known children (five daughters and four sons).

merchant b.1718

Archibald's son George Bartholomew was born 10 June 1718 in Linlithgow. Like his father, George was a merchant in Linlithgow. He married Anne Andrew in 1745, three months after Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie') had landed in Scotland to start gathering men for what was to become the Jacobite Rebellion. George and Anne had seven children, but the first two died as infants. The eldest surviving son was John Bartholomew, born in 1754. John settled across the Firth of forth to become laird of Baldridge, Dunfermline.

It is with this son John's, first son George Bartholomew, born in 1784, that family's engraving and map-making tradition started. This George was born out of wedlock to Margaret Aitken in Edinburgh. As the first of six generations of mapmakers the Bartholomew name would become well-established in cartographic and geographical circles the world over.
