  Notes transcribed from the rent receipt book of Greendykes Farm, Kirkliston, West Lothian show that James Bartilman was a tenant on the farm from 1653 onwards. The surviving Kirkliston parish register does not record births until 1675 onwards. Until 1675, the farm belonged to the Earl of Winton, of "Niddrie Castell". Then it passed into the hands of the Hopes of Hopetoun.
